A group of NGTTOA members called on Housing Minister MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar at his office in Reis Magos and requested him to impress upon the government not to grant permission to Ola, Uber, Meru taxi services in the State.
NGTTOA General Secretary Vinayak Nanoskar and members Umesh Korgaonkar and Sanjay Vengurlekar informed Salgaonkar that thousand of Goans are dependent on the tourist taxi business.
The association members said they had met former
chief ministers on a number of occasions, requesting them not to grant permission to
Ola, Uber, Meru taxi services in the State.
“If permission is granted to these taxis, they will create a monopoly which will have an adverse affect on the business of private taxis owners, who will be forced to launch an agitation and paralyze Goa,” warned Nanoskar.
The members also informed Salgaonkar that two years ago, they had requested the tourism department to display boards at beaches and prominent tourist places, depicting the government-approved taxi fares similar to the one displayed at Dabolim airport.
“But the tourism department has not taken any action in this regard. If the government fulfills our demands, the NGTTOA members are ready to affix meters on their taxis,” Nanoskar added.
Later speaking to reporter, Salgaonkar said the grievances and demands of NGTTOA members were justified as thousands of Goans are engaged in the taxi business.
Salgaonkar said he will take up the issue with his party and also the Chief Minister.
