MARGAO
Will the authorities buckle under pressure and toe the line of the Tourism department which has strongly rooted for the return of the Margao carnival parade route to the old venue “ Holy Spirit-Margao Municipal square route?
For, the carnival parade route and other processions, including the Shigmo parade, Julus procession and the Shiv Jayanti procession, were all shifted to the Ravindra bhavan-Nehru stadium route following strong recommendation from the district authorities as well as the district police top brass, including traffic authorities.
South Goa district Collector, Ajit Roy, district Police Chief, South SP Arvind Gawas, and traffic officers went in a huddle at the Matanhy Saldanha Administration Complex on Wednesday evening to discuss the carnival parade route ahead of the festivities scheduled on February 23. While the district administration and the police authorities discussed and deliberated on contentious route issues in detail, the authorities sought to maintain secrecy on the outcome of the deliberations.
When ‘The Goan’ contacted the district Collector, Ajit Roy to shed light on the outcome of the deliberations on the Margao Carnival parade route, the Collector only said the discussions and deliberations on the route are presently underway, promising to share the details of the route once the authorities take the final call. Officials in private say the authorities have been put in a tight corner following Tourism department’s letter to the authorities seeking assistance and support to hold the Carnival parade route back to the old Holy Spirit-MMC square.
