Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar has said that he is ready to quit politics even if five per cent of the BJP worker in Canacona are opposed to his candidature; even as he suggested that the party field as many as four candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community in the forthcoming Assembly election.
Tawadkar further said that the BJP leadership should consider giving ticket to new and young faces in Quepem taluka instead of nominating former MLA Prakash Velip.
Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the inauguration of the soil testing laboratory at the government agriculture farm, Margao on Friday, Tawadkar said that he has no doubt that the BJP leadership would not only re-nominate him for the Canacona seat because he belongs to the ST community, but that he would get the ticket due to his performance as a MLA and Minister. “I do not know who are the BJP people in Cancacona who are opposed my candidature. I would like to tell these people that even if five per cent of BJP workers are opposed to my candidature, I am ready to quit politics,” he told the media.
Replying to another question, the Sports Minister said that the ST community would certainly hope that the BJP gives four tickets to the community in the coming election. “Since I and Ganesh Gaonkar belong to the ST community, we hope that the party leadership will give representation to two more persons from the community in the coming election,” he added.
On Quepem constituency, the Sports Minister has favoured new faces to contest the coming election, saying there are at least three young candidates, who can be considered for the party ticket. “Former MLA Prakash Velip had lost the election thrice and I feel the party should give the ticket to a young candidate this time around,” he added.
