With the rains receding all over the region, almost all routes leading to Goa are now open for traffic movement. Three main approach routes from Belagavi via Chorla, Amboli and Tillari that were closed during the heavy rains during the first and second week of August are now available for traffic movement with certain restrictions.
The Belagavi-Panaji road via Chorla is totally open for all vehicles except for overloaded and heavy multi-axle vehicles. Another shorter route to Goa via Tillari ghat was opened for vehicular movement since late Friday evening.
According to Chandgad PWD authorities, the route was opened after demands from commuters and vegetable dealers from Belagavi and Chandgad taluka, whose supplies to Goa were affected.
The road via Amboli that was open only for LCVs and cars will be available for buses from Sunday. According to PWD authorities from Sindhudurg, as the there were landslides from the valley side of the ghats, the repair works were impossible, hence the road repairs were undertaken since the last fortnight and are expected to be complete by Saturday evening.
From Sunday, buses from Belagavi and Kolhapur to Sindhudurg and Goa will be allowed on a trial basis along with cars and other lighter vehicles. However, movement of trucks and other heavy vehicles will not be allowed, an official said.
It may be recalled that all the three routes to Goa were stopped during heavy rains since the first week of August after which all the routes to reach Sindhudurg and Goa were diverted. The buses were diverted via Kolhapur and Radhanagari. However, with the repairs done, commuters can now travel directly by bus to Sindhudurg via Chandgad and Ajara.
