Withheld approval for parking lot to mop up revenue: MMC chief

MARGAO

Hazard a guess why the Margao Municipal Council withheld the nod to Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to start work on the Parking Plaza on the MMC-acquired land at the Old Market.

Well, during discussions with the hawkers and vendors setting up stalls at the MMC-acquired land during the week-long Purumentachem fest fair, MMC Chief Damu Shirodkar pointed out that he did not sign on the parking plaza file so that the civic body does not lose revenue by way of fees from the stalls set up at the fair.

Displaying the parking plaza file to the hawkers and vendors, Damu said he is concerned about moping up revenue resources to the civic body and hence had withheld the MMC nod for the commencement of work on the parking lot.

The MMC had earned revenue of around Rs 30-odd lakh out of the feast fair held on the acquired land in the month of December.

The GSUDA and its contractor had been waiting for the MMC to give the green signal to start work on the parking plaza project over the last one month, but in vain.
