Woman assaults doctor over mother’s death at Carmona

IMA members protest, cops register case

MARGAO
Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) rallied behind a senior doctor, Dr Babu Redkar, who claimed that he was assaulted by a woman at his clinic at Carmona on Monday.
The IMA members led by IMA, Margao president Dr Suraj Prabhudesai assembled at the Colva police station, demanding registration of a FIR against the woman under the Goa Medicare Service Act.
The incident occurred in Dr Babu Redkar’s clinic at Carmona on Monday when Genevia Fernandes came to question the doctor why he did not attend to her mother when she was brought outside the clinic a couple of days ago. Dr Babu complained to the Colva police that she held him responsible for her mother’s death on grounds that he did not attend to her when she was brought outside the clinic. He alleged that the woman later gave a blow which landed on his spectacles, damaging the glass. Scratch marks were also found on the doctor’s hand.
“It’s not that I did not want to attend the woman who was brought to my clinic. But, I had no oxygen nor other facilities and hence had advised them to take the patient to the hospital”, Dr Babu claimed.
IMA Margao unit president, Suraj Prabhudesai later said that the IMA has rallied behind Dr Redkar and warned that the medical fraternity will not take such incidents lightly. “We will not take assault lightly. We are here to serve the people and not to take any bashing”, Dr Suraj warned.
Colva police said a case under section 448, 427, 323 read with section 34 of the IPC and under section 4 of the Goa Medicare Service was registered against the accused. Further investigations are in progress.
