The 108 ambulance usually attends to patients who are ill or injured, but the cries of an infant who was born in the ambulance at Rivona on Friday evening was one of those rare moments bringing joy to the ambulance staff.
A migrant worker residing in Pirla-Quepem who was being taken in a 108 ambulance attached to Neturlim village delivered a baby boy in the ambulance as she was being taken to the Quepem Primary Health Centre (PHC).
According to reports, the 108 ambulance was summoned to Pirla at about 5.30 pm to transport a pregnant woman, identified as Sushma, to the Quepem PHC.
The 108 ambulance staff, comprising the driver Devidas Gaonkar and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Subhadra Chauhan, shifted Sushma to the ambulance and began their journey to take her to the Quepem PHC.
As the ambulance reached Collamb-Rivona, Sushma began experiencing labour pains and Gaonkar stopped the ambulance by the roadside and Chauhan provided assistance to the woman. Within a short while, Sushma delivered a baby boy in the ambulance.
Gaonkar and Chauhan later shifted the woman and her newborn at the Quepem PHC.
Locals have praised the 108 ambulance service at Netravali for providing assistance to people in remote areas of Sanguem taluka.
