It’s an open secret that women voters had outnumbered their males counterparts by a couple of votes at the just concluded Lok Sabha election for the South Goa seat.
Of the total 598,767 electorate, male electors were pegged around 290,131 and their female counterparts around 308,627.
On polling day, however, presence of females at the polling booths was felt across South Goa, more pronounced in the eight Assembly segments of Salcete.
In fact, a glance at the voters turn out in the May 7 election shows that barring Ponda and Vasco Assembly segments, women outnumbered men at the polling booths on Tuesday as they turned up in large numbers to exercise their franchise.
Women voters, however, dominated the polling in the eight Assembly segments not just by a couple of votes, but in hundreds and thousands.
Take the case of Nuvem. This female-dominated minority Assembly segment saw around 11,580 women voters coming out to cast their votes, leaving behind their male counterparts. In fact, only around 8,580 male voters turned up for polling in Tuesday.
Benaulim was another case in point. Of the total 19,954 votes cast on Tuesday, around 11,243 women came out to vote, while only 8,711 males has cast their vote.
The voting trend of women outnumbering males was seen in the remaining six Assembly segments of Velim, Curtorim, Navelim, Margao and Fatorda, besides Cuncolim. However, presence of women voters at the polling stations on May 7 was more pronounced in all the segments, except Margao. Though women led men in casting their votes, around 10,784 men and 11,513 women turned up to cast their votes.
Fatorda too saw a surge of women voters on Polling day. Statistics showed that of the total 22,951 voters, who cast their votes, women voters were pegged around 12,230 and males 10,721.
