SANGUEM
The indefinite strike by the sugarcane cultivators outside the Sanjivani factory at Dharbandora entered the third day on Thursday.
A number of women, particularly from Sanguem taluka, took part in the strike by the Gomantak Uss Utpadak Sanghatna. Social activist Tara Kerkar also extended her support to the striking agitators on Thursday.
Speaking at the venue, Kerkar accused the government of its failure to consider the demands of sugarcane growers which was assured three years back when the farmers had gone on an agitation for seven days.
“The farmers are not demanding something extraordinary but are only agitating for their genuine demands to start the Sanjivani Sugar Factory. Where does the government want the farmers to go without any plans to start the Sanjivani Sugar Factory,” questioned Kerkar.
The women cultivators from Sanguem brought to the fore their difficulties if the government failed to start the ethanol plant or revive operations at the Sanjivani Sugar Factory.
With only a year left for the five-year term fixed for payment of compensation, the sugarcane growers are in fix regarding their livelihood in the years to come.
With no assurance from the government as of now, the farmers reiterated that they would continue with their agitation till their demands are met.
