MARGAO: Angry women from government Junta quarters at Pajifond came out in protest on Friday over the dilapidated condition of the residential buildings and the PWD’s failure to carry out the upkeep and maintenance.

They highlighted a host of issues plaguing the residential quarters, including non-functional lights, crumbling roofs, electrical fittings posing danger et al for want of maintenance.

What brought the women out on the streets were the recent incidents wherein main electrical fitting were engulfed in flames. They demanded that the PWD carry out the bare minimum maintenance of the electrical fittings and ensure the safety of the people, including children.

The women took members of the media from the C buildings to the B buildings to show the extent of the problems being faced at the government quarters. “After the two recent fire incidents, engulfing the electrical fittings, we are concerned about our safety. The quarters are owned by the PWD, Division VIII, but they asked us to take up the electrical issue with Div XXII. Are the residents supposed to run from pillar to post to get the electrical fittings repaired and secured? Is it not the responsibility of the PWD officers to address the issues staring at the people”, questioned Kalpana Desai.

She said the PWD maintenance unit at the Junta quarters are not been provided with any items to take up the repair work, reminding that the people have paying been the rent and the maintenance charges for the upkeep of the buildings.

The women pointed out that they have only been given false promises by the PWD and the powers that be that the buildings will be taken up for repairs and maintenance, but in vain.

They demanded that the officials and elected representatives take cognizance of the state of affairs of the building on priority.
