Won't interfere, law will take it's own course: CM

MARGAO

Stating that he is not going to interfere in the minor girl rape case involving St Cruz MLA Babush Monserrate given the sensitive nature of the case, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Friday said the police have been given a free hand to do their job, and the law should take its own case.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of his visit to Navelim to inspect the western bypass project on Friday, the Chief Minister said the alleged rape case is serious in nature since the victim involved is a minor, while the accused is a representative of the people.

“The accused is not just a one-time MLA, but has been elected thrice to the Legislative Assembly. The police should understand and hear his side as well,” he said.

Parsekar said that he as Home Minister, as well as the police, should tread cautiously since the accused has claimed political vendetta.

"Since I am at the helm of affairs of the state, I have to be cautious while commenting because the accused has claimed political vendetta,” he said.

Pointing out that the accused has been a people’s representative for the last 15 years, the Chief Minister said the police have to do their job, adding that politicians should not utter a word so that there’s no injustice to the victim minor girl as well as the accused.

“The law should take its own course. The police must do their job,” he said, while asserting that he would not interfere in the ongoing police investigations into the case.
