Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has stated that work on the multipurpose sports complex in Socorro has begun, after it had come to a standstill due to a dispute between the contractor and Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).

He was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone for the Hindu crematorium at Carrem-Socorro in the presence of Sarpanch Sadeep Vazarkar and panch members Dittosa Lobo, Anil Pednekar, Sanjay Pednekar and Penha-da-Franca Panch Sham Kamat.

A lot of development activities are going on in Socorro. The overhead water tank of 650 cubic metres capacity at Carrem has being commissioned recently, due to which, the water problem faced by residents for quite a long time has reduced considerably.

“The work to widen the road from Socorro church to Vaddem has begun, while work on the multipurpose sports complex which had come to a standstill due to some dispute between the contractor and GSIDC has now been restarted. Cooperation of residents is important for developmental activities,” said Khaunte.

Commenting on the Hindu crematorium at Carrem-Socorro, Khaunte said there was a long-pending demand from residents of Socorro for a crematorium at Carrem.

“Hence, this crematorium is being constructed by the PWD at an estimated cost of Rs 35 lakh. This cost include the construction of compound wall, pyre shed, Anantdham and pavers and the work will be completed within four months,” said Khaunte.
