A worker involved in roof repair work was arrested by Colvale police on charges of stealing jewelery worth Rs 4.5 lakh from a house in Madhlawada-Assonora.
According to reports, the house owner had decided to change the roofing of her house and had given the work to a contractor. The accused, Tanveer Kalim Ahmed (20) a native of UP but residing at Assonora, was employed by the contractor.
During the work to erect a new roof, Ahmed is alleged to have searched the rooms of the house and entered the house by climbing the roof with the help of a ladder at around 3 am on Tuesday.
He is reported to have stolen jewellery worth Rs 4.5 lakh from a cupboard in the house.
The family heard the sound of someone entering the house and notified the police. A police team went to the house but no one was inside.
The accused is believed to have fled with the stolen jewellery after the theft.
Later in the morning, the family noticed the jewellery missing from the cupboard and contacted the police.
During investigation, Colvale police realised that one persons employed to work on the roof of the house had gone missing. Police began a search and located the accused at the Assonora bus station, as he was planning to leave for his home town. Police then searched his belongings and found the stolen jewellery in his possession.
The accused was arrested under Sections 457 and 380 of IPC. Police are conducting further investigation under the guidance of Police Inspector Vijay Rane.
