The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday extended its full-fledged support to the people opposing the marina project in the State.
The MMC discussed various issues, including stray cattle and coal pollution, at a special council meeting on Tuesday.
“We are a small state and projects like the marina can only destroy us and the entire council has extended its full-fledged support to the people who will oppose the marina project,” said MMC Chairperson Girish Borker, while speaking to reporters after the meeting.
“As regarding coal pollution, some councillors from Sada said it was cause of concern in their area. We are not against any business because many people are employed in the companies but they have to take steps to minimise any form of pollution while handling coal transportation.”
“We have now asked authorities to inform us about the powers we have to make a difference and take steps to help reduce coal pollution, which will also be one of our main motives” said Borker.
The MMC chairperson said the council had taken up a drive to tackle stray cattle and had floated a tender to appoint an agency to clear stray cattle from Vasco.
“The agency had begun the work to clear stray cattle and many cattle had been cleared from the roads. However, our councillor Fredrick Henriques has informed that stray cattle are still present and we will now get in touch with the agency,” said Borker.
“We had even kept 25 percent of the tendered amount with us and we will not give them the pending money till the stray cattle are totally cleared.”
Borker also said the meeting discussed the revised rates of the MMC which will be applicable after the reassessment of houses in the municipality.
“We have asked all 25 councillors of the MMC to help us conduct the reassessment drive successfully and we also appeal to all three MLAs in the port town to help us with the reassessment drive,” said Borker.
