The video went viral on WhatsApp and Facebook within no time. In response to the video, the minister then asked the transport department to issue a challan to the driver.
The video showed the minister’s car overtaking on the old Mandovi bridge. “The car also violated the law by crossing the yellow line. It’s time our ministers realize that they are not above the law and should rather lead by example,” said a message that went viral along with the video.
Soon after, Paliencar who was not in the state took to social media. In a post on Facebook, the minister explained that his driver was taking the car from the service centre to his home, and went on to say how he would lead by example.
“An incident happened in Goa while I am on an official visit out of the state. My official vehicle driven by my driver while taking it from Verna showroom to my residence after servicing was found overtaking on Mandovi bridge. As servants of public our beautiful Goa, it should be our priority to lead by example. On knowing of this incident I have personally spoken to concerned officials in Directorate of Transport and instructed them to act according to law as such incident in future should not happen,” he said in his online post.
Later he took to Twitter to post screenshots of the overtaking vehicle and challans for the fines that the driver had to pay. A total fine of Rs 600 had been paid to the Department of Transport.
On the challan, RTO inspectors wrote, “As per the notification, the MV was issued this challan for overtaking on the Mandovi bridge. The said vehicle was captured on video and was sent through WhatsApp.”
