The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has removed all encroachments along the Nullah near the MMC market, but the Water Resources Department (WRD) decided to undertake further work on the Nullah after the monsoon.
The WRD had begun work to clean the Nullah but could not continue further on account of encroachments on the Nullah, which hindered movement of its machinery to the site.
The WRD then reported the matter to the MMC and the council inspected the area and found that 44 shop owners had illegally extended their shops by encroaching on the Nullah, without permission from the MMC.
Notices were issued in November 2017 to the 44 shop owners and in their reply, the shop owners requested the MMC not to demolish their extensions as they were over two decades old.
Unsatisfied with their replies, the MMC demolished the illegally extended structures in April and also cleared the debris from the Nullah.
The council then requested the WRD to complete the remaining work. A WRD officer informed that the remaining work would be undertaken after the monsoon.
