After a break of almost a week, the monsoon picked up again on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for Goa till August 29. The State received light to moderate rain on Tuesday, with 7.5 mm recorded till evening.
So far, Goa has received 2,531.6 mm of rain this season, slightly below the normal of 2,597.6 mm, showing a shortfall of 2.5 per cent.
The IMD said the rainfall is due to a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the Odisha coast, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above sea level and tilting southwestwards with height.
In the 24 hours ending Monday night, Valpoi recorded the highest rainfall with 27.2 mm, followed by Dharbandora (18.6 mm). Other places recorded lighter showers: Canacona (12.4 mm), Pernem (10.8 mm), Sanguem (9.7 mm), Margao (9 mm), Sanquelim (8.6 mm), Mapusa (4.2 mm), Ela (Old Goa) (4 mm), Mormugao (3.8 mm), while Panaji received only 1.9 mm.
