Eight crew were rescued after a barge carrying iron ore pellets sank in the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) waters.

According to sources, the barge was on its way to deliver the iron ore pellets to a ship docked at the port about two days ago when it struck a submerged shipwreck. “The barge developed a crack in its base after colliding with the wreck, which caused water to rush in. Fortunately, the crew members were rescued immediately,” said a source.

The barge eventually got stuck in the wreck. Attempts were made by the owner to deploy a floating crane for its removal, but rough sea conditions have delayed the operation. “The barge is still lodged in the wreck, and clearing it could take a few more days,” the source added.

Local concerns have also resurfaced regarding the presence of old shipwrecks in the MPA waters.

“Two large ships sank in these shallow waters years ago. While MPA recently cleared one, the other wreck still remains. Locally known as ‘Pakistan’, this wreck has been responsible for several accidents involving barges, fishing trawlers and small boats over the years. Authorities must act urgently to prevent future accidents,” said the source.
