A yoga instructor from UP was arrested at Morjim on Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run road mishap at Khola-Canacona, which claimed the life of a 48-year-old man from the village late Sunday evening.
Canacona Police Inspector Tulsidas Naik said the accused, Krishna Sharma (40), was allegedly driving the car which was involved in the hit-and-run mishap, leading to the death of Paixao (Lullu) Fernandes.
According to police, the accused, who hails from UP and is an instructor at a yoga centre in Khola, was nabbed in Morjim and brought to the Canacona police station later in the day. He will be produced before a court on Wednesday.
Sharma is accused to have hidden the car in some bushes at Madem-Khola about 4 kms from the accident site. The vehicle was, however, traced by locals after at least two onlookers and along with some village youth followed the car, which was speeding away after the mishap.
According to locals, Fernandes was walking back home after his work at a beach shack when he was allegedly knocked from behind by the car and died on the spot.
Another pedestrian saw the car knocking down Lullu and the vehicle then slowing down, before speeding away. An onlooker managed to note down the registration of the car.
Meanwhile, several people visited the Fernandes house at Kazumoll in Saleri-Khola on Tuesday, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and compensation to the victim’s family.
On learning that the accused had been arrested by Canacona police on Tuesday evening, a group of residents rushed to the Canacona police station.
