A picnic to the Dudhsagar river in Dabhal ended in tragedy when one youth drowned while another youth was rescued in a serious condition.
According to reports, a group of about nine friends had gone for a picnic at the Dudhsagar river when two of them are reported to have gone for a swim. They began to struggle in the water and one friend went to their rescue.
However, Yoganan Gaude (21) of Bethoda-Ponda drowned, while another youth, identified as Santosh from Vasco was rescued, but was shifted to the GMC hospital in a serious condition.
A police team and a fire tender went to the site and the body of Gaude was later retrieved from the river.
Sources said the youth had initially planned to go to Codar for a picnic, but since fencing work was in progress the friends shifted their venue to the Dudhsagar river at Dabhal.
Local Panch Ramakant Gaonkar assisted the youth in shifting the injured Santosh to the GMC hospital, while former Sarpanch Bhola Gaonkar and Ananad Gaonkar also provided assistance at the site.
