The River Rejuvenation Committee-Goa (RRCG) in its report for the rejuvenation of the Mandovi river has documented around 12 restaurants along the river to be draining untreated sewage into it.

The report also highlights that houses in 30 villages are polluting the river with direct release of sewage and suggests an 18-month time frame to implement a rejuvenation plan.

The twelve restaurants and commercial enterprises named by  the committee as releasing waste and sewage into the river are Casa  Britona, Golden Heritage, Marine Slipway and Jetty, Mandovi Fishermen  Marketing Society, Sai Krupa Bar and Restaurant, Frankie’s Family  Restaurant, Thaal “ Bohra Cuisine, Babazin, Mandovi River Front,  Navdurga Garage, Cabo Cabana Cottage and Rohan Bar and Restaurant.

The RRC-G was set up by the State government following an order from the National Green Tribunal. The Goa State Pollution Control Board has also inspected the various rivers in the State and prepared a detailed rejuvenation plan with a specific time framework.

Arresting the flow of sewage into the rivers, construction of septic tanks and seepage system are some measures among others proposed in the rejuvenation plan. The committee has also proposed action against the twelve

restaurants and houses which discharge sewage into the river within a month.

The committee has suggested developing a system for waste collection and also setting up a bio-digester besides building toilet facilities at all the jetties along the Mandovi river.

Enhancing the capacity of the Patto sewerage treatment plant and setting up of a bio-medical waste treatment plant are two other significant measures proposed in the plan.
