Having stood at the site since 1947, the bus stand, popularly know as the ‘Goa Bus Stand’ opposite the Railway Station will have a new look in Belagavi.
The old and dilapidated building which houses a canteen, booking counters, newspaper stall and other small shops will be replaced by a posh building and Belagavi North MLA Anil Benake laid the foundation stone for the project on Tuesday morning.
The ‘Smart City’ authorities have taken up the reconstruction of the bus stand at an estimated cost of Rs 2.26 crore.
According to sources, the old bus stand was inaugurated on December 21, 1947. Apart from Karnataka State Transport counter, the bus stand also had a special cabin for booking of Goa’s KTC buses.
For decades, buses from Goa, Karwar and coastal Karnataka region would arrive and depart from the bus stand, offering convenience to commuters from Goa and Karwar region.
“The state-of-art bus stand building will be constructed at the cost of Rs 2.26 crore and will accommodate 12 shops and other facilities for commuters, including the offices for NWKRTC and KTC,” Cantonment authorities said.
The Railway Station area is also expected to take a new look as construction of a new Railway Station building is also in full swing.
Cantonment CEO Barchaswa, elected members Niranjana Ashtekar, Sajid Shaikh, Rizwan Bepari, Alledin Killedar, Dr Madan Dongre, Vikram Purohit , Executive Engineer Satish Mannurkar and officials were present at the function to lay the foundation stone.
