Yet another ‘tomorrow’ went by on Monday but the government made no headway in commencing the promised operation to pump out the nearly 2,500 metric tonnes of dangerous naphtha cargo from the chemical tanker MT Nu Shi Nalini, grounded a few hundred meters from Marivel beach next to Cabo Raj Bhavan at Dona Paula.
A day after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant presided over a meeting on Sunday at MPT to finalise the modus operandi for the operation and said it would begin on Monday, the government agencies involved are now yet again claiming it will likely begin ‘tomorrow’ (Tuesday). There is however no clarity from official quarters which agency has been entrusted the onus and responsibility for the task or who would be held responsible if the operation goes awry leading to any disastrous eventuality.
Meanwhile Urban Development Minister Milind Naik has reportedly objected to a plan to transfer the naphtha and keep it in storage on the premises of a company in his constituency at Sada, Mormugao.
Naik said he has told Sawant not to shift the naphtha from the ship to Ganesh Benzoplast at Sada.
“I have spoken to the CM and told him it will be more dangerous,” Naik said.
