The motorcycle pilots stationed at the bustling Mapusa bus-stand recently received a significant boost in their working conditions with the construction of a much-needed pilot stand within the premises of the Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL).
The new facility, aimed at providing shelter and amenities, marks a remarkable improvement for the pilots, who had previously endured harsh weather conditions to earn their livelihood.
For years, motorcycle pilots, a unique feature of Goa’s transport system, have braved the scorching sun and relentless rain while working in the open, without any shelter.
This challenging situation prompted the Rotary Club of Mapusa Elegance to devise a plan to build a shed for the pilots within the bus-stand.
The initiative gained momentum when KTCL Chairman Ulhas Tuenkar endorsed the proposal and allocated space for the construction of a pilot stand.
“Motorcycle pilots are a part of Goa’s heritage because it’s a unique mode of transport available only in our State. We need to preserve it and, therefore, help the pilots in their endeavours,” stated Rahul Mhambre, President of the Rotary Club of Mapusa Elegance.
He emphasized the difficult working conditions faced by the pilots and highlighted the club’s commitment to improving their working environment.
KTCL Chairman Ulhas Tuenkar, who played a pivotal role in making the project a reality, shared his thoughts during the inauguration ceremony.
“When the Rotarians approached me with the plan to construct the shed, I readily agreed because a shed was the need of the hour for the pilots who worked in difficult circumstances,” Tuenkar said.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by the motorcycle pilots and affirmed the government’s commitment to initiatives that benefit Goans.
“The motorcycle pilots were exposed to the sun and the rains, making it very challenging for them to do their business. Any initiative which is in the interest of Goans will be given preference by the government,” Tuenkar added.
Reflecting on the Rotary Club’s ongoing support for the motorcycle pilots, it is noteworthy that just a week prior, the club had distributed helmets to the pilots. Tuenkar expressed KTCL’s interest in collaborating with the Rotary Club on future projects aimed at public welfare.
By providing essential facilities, the project has significantly enhanced the working conditions for motorcycle pilots, ensuring they can continue their vital role in Goa’s transport system with greater comfort and dignity.
