Half of Khotigao village was cut off from the mainland after heavy rains triggered a landslide, collapsing the main road at Avem on Sunday afternoon.
The Disaster Management Team, led by Canacona Mamlatdar Manoj Korgaonkar, swiftly arrived at the site. They called in PWD and electricity officials, and requested police presence to manage the crowd of curious villagers.
Village Sarpanch Anandu Dessai also coordinated with the disaster management team on site.
Sources reported that the heavy downpour triggered a landslide, bringing down the roadside retaining wall into the rapidly flowing nullah. By the afternoon, more than half of the road had caved in, exposing underground pipelines and cables.
With the main road at Avem collapsed, residents of Bardem, Avali, Yedda, Kuskem, and Nadkem were cut off from the mainland.
To prevent further damage, the Disaster Management Team immediately began restoration work to temporarily reopen the road. Rocks and boulders were transported and dumped to fill the crater caused by the landslide and floodwaters.
Late into the night, workers, supervised by Mamlatdar Korgaonkar, partially restored the road, allowing cautious traffic flow. Final touches were still being applied to ensure the complete restoration of Khotigao’s main road.
