As the opposition continues to see red over the spate of crimes against women in the state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant claims that the solution to such crimes is rooted in the colour pink.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced that his Home Ministry was mulling the formation of a special ‘pink force’ to tackle crimes against women.
Speaking to senior police officers, following a training session on Wednesday, Sawant also said that since Goa had topped the national charts with respect to crime detection, the uniformed force should now focus on crime prevention.
“I had a meeting with the Director General of Police and Superintendent of Police (Crime) on prevention of crime and discussed what precautions we need to take and adopt new initiatives especially for the safety of women. We need to do this,” the Chief Minister said.
“Home department will work on it. We will provide whatever support you require for awareness purpose. We are thinking of creating a pink force -- pink female force -- especially for women safety. We are thinking of how to introduce this,” Sawant also said.
Sawant has been the target of opposition in the last few months over the rising spate of crimes against women, especially the Siddhi Naik case as well as the alleged rape and attempt to suicide of a minor girl in Porvorim earlier this week.
The ‘Pink Force’ initiative is in existence in Delhi as well as Kerala and is tasked with tackling crimes against women as well as to make the police appear people-friendly.
Sawant also said that the state had topped the rank of states as far as crime detection was concerned and added that the focus of the state police should be on crime prevention.
“We have the highest crime detection rate in the country. But we need (to focus on) the prevention of crime. We need to work on prevention. No doubt, you are detecting crime. But you will say, how can we prevent crime. It is possible,” Sawant said.
