Justice Mahesh Sonak, Judge of the Bombay High Court on Saturday said that the legitimate purpose of education is not to fill an empty mind with lots of facts, figures and information, but to replace an empty mind with an open mind.

“Always remember, the mind is like a parachute. It works best when it is open,” Justice Sonak, while delivering the valedictory address at the Dr Carmo D'Souza Memorial First Goa State Level Moot Court Competition, organized by the G R Kare College of Law Alumni Association at Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law campus at Margao.

Others present on the dais were Dr Marian Pinheiro, Adv Sanjit Dessai, Principal Dr Saba Da Silva and Adv Ann Furtado.

The finals of the moot court competition were presided over by a bench comprising Justice Mahesh Sonak and Justice Valmiki Menezes, both Judges of the Bombay High Court.

After the conclusion of the final round, Justice Valmiki Menezes interacted with the law students and guided them in enhancing their advocacy skills. It was followed by the valedictory function.

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony, Justice Mahesh Sonak said: “College education can help you to think for yourselves, to be innovative and to be creative. Creativity is allowing you to make mistakes.”

He further said: "I am conscious that today we live in an age that is proud of the machines that think and suspicious of the men and women who try to. But, I would only urge that you should learn to defy this unfortunate notion; experience swimming against the current."

Earlier, Adv Sanjit Dessai welcomed the gathering, Dr Saba Da Silva spoke about Dr Carmo D' Souza, Dr Marian Pineirho declared the prize winners and Adv Ann Furtado proposed the vote of thanks.
