QMC Chairperson Filu D’Costa said he was pursuing the matter with the government library officials and the council will soon set up the Nagar library in the vacant commercial complex building.
Speaking to The Goan, D’Costa said Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar and councillors were in discussion to set up the Nagar library in Quepem town. “It will serve a major chunk of people and students,” he said.
“The government library officials will visit the complex building shortly for site inspection and following their observations and discussion with us, further procedure will be done.”
When asked why the newly built commercial complex was kept unutilised for almost one year, D’Costa said the commercial complex was built to provide better infrastructure and facilities to the businessmen and other locals vendors. “But the shops were not given on rent, because the existing fish market and its neighbouring old building will be demolished and then new fish market project will come up,” he said.
“Therefore, at that time these vendors will have to be shifted in the commercial complex building. If we give these shops on lease or rent, then there will be problem in shifting these vendors to new premises,” he explained.
The existing commercial complex building was built one year ago by spending lakhs of rupees from government’s Golden Jubilee fund. It was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza in the presence of Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar. Since then, the complex building has remained closed.
