Admitting that Goa Mahila Congress has so far failed to get adequate representation vis-Ã -vis party tickets, All India Mahila Congress Secretary, Dr Seema Fernandes on Thursday said the Mahila Congress will continue to press for women reservations.
She, however, said that the Congress party was bound by party discipline and the final word on ticket distribution rested with the high command.
“For the last four years, we have been demanding 33 per cent reservation for women. But it is not happening. As a frontal organization, our demand is always there that our ladies have to get the ticket and we have been trying. So our efforts will continue this time too,” said Fernandes, who is also the incharge of the Goa Mahila Congress.
The All India Mahila Congress Secretary was addressing the media at a function to issue appointment letters for the newly formed blocks in North Goa.
State Mahila President, Beena Naik along with other mahila leaders was also present.
Continuing, Fernandes said any mahila who shows a keen interest in contesting and satisfies the winnability quotient has the full right to apply for the party ticket.
She said if such women leaders who are interested to contest come forward the Mahila Congress will fully back them.
“We are trying to look up for women leaders who are showing leadership qualities and who are interested to contest. We have asked interested ladies to please come forward. We will support them and demand a ticket,” she said.
The All India Mahila Congress Secretary issued appointment letters for the newly formed five Mahila blocks in North Goa “ Cumbarjua, St Andre, Saligao, Siolim and Valpoi.
State Mahila Congress President Beena Naik said women have led the way in the political field too and contributed to the success of the party.
‘We have full faith in our mahilas and expect them to bring Congress to power in the State again,” Naik said.
