@173 inches of rain, monsoon season officially ends in State

The Southwest Monsoon season 2024 officially ended on Monday, with Goa recording its wettest monsoon in over a century. 

The four-month season, though officially ended, the withdrawal of the monsoon is yet to commence fully. 

The year's monsoon recorded 4400.7mm (173.25 inches) of rainfall, which is considered to be highest ever. This is against the normal average of 3007.8mm (118.41 inches) rainfall, being 46.3 per cent surplus. 

The rainfall activity surpassed that of 2020, when Goa received 162 inches of rains

The southwest monsoon officially runs from June to September in India and despite the official end of the season, Goa has been experiencing isolated rainfall, after incessant rains until August. 

The season saw July 8 recording the highest single-day rainfall with 236 mm.

As on September 30, Valpoi registered the highest cumulative rainfall at 5536.2 mm, followed by Sanguem with 5438.8 mm. Quepem recorded 4736.8 mm, Pernem 4550.2 mm, Panaji 4067.5 mm, while Dabolim saw the least with 3512.1 mm.
