Two former mayors of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), who were at one time close aides of Panaji Atanasio (Babush) Monserratte, met the AICC senior election observer P Chidambaram on Thursday and expressed their desire to join the Congress.
If admitted into the party, Uday Madkaikar and Tony Rodrigues are likely to stake claim to the Congress tickets to contest in Panaji and Taleigao constituencies respectively, to contest against Babush Monserrate and his wife, Jennifer, who have desired to contest on the BJP ticket.
GPCC President Girish Chodankar welcomed the intention of Madkaikar and Rodrigues to join Congress and said the party would be strengthened with the entry of these leaders.
“One-and-half years ago, some people were raising questions on whether Congress has any winnable candidates. Now, winnable leaders are approaching us. This is sign of increasing public confidence in Congress party,” said Chodankar.
Madkaikar said he and Tony felt humiliated in the BJP cadre.
