Sao Jose de Areal residents woke to the shocking news of a semi-decomposed body of a youngster lying near the irrigation canal on Thursday.
Police later identified the body as that of a 21-year old fish vendor, Akhtar Raza, a resident of Dicarpale, Navelim and a native of Karnataka.
The Maina Curtorim police was quick to register a case of murder after the police found that the head of the youth was reportedly smashed with a stone.
As news spread of the youth spread, the police rushed to the site to start the investigations. Sub-divisional Police Officer, DySP Shivendu Bhushan along with Maina Curtorim police inspector Mohan Gawde rushed to Areal village to take stock of the situation.
PI Gawde told The Goan later in the evening the police registered the death of the youngster as murder. He said the exact cause of death will be known after the post mortem examination scheduled on Friday.
The father of the youth informed that Raza had been into fish business. The parents pointed out that Raza had left the house on Sunday noon after having lunch. He called his parents at around 10.30 pm on Sunday but did not return home. His cell phone was also found switched off.
The parents and locals have demanded a thorough probe into the death of the youngster and bring the culprits to book. The police have exuded confidence of achieving a breakthrough in the case.
