A 53-year-old patient from Navelim undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim for chronic kidney disease, chronic Hepatitis C infection with liver cirrhosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes lost his life on Sunday after contracting Covid-19 at GMC.
He was admitted at GMC on December 26, 2020 and contracted Covid-19 on January 11. This was one of the two Covid-related deaths recorded in the mortality bulletin of the Directorate of Health Services on Sunday.
The other Covid fatality was a 74-year-old man from Pomburpa, who also died at GMC. With this, the Covid victim count of the State has climbed to 768. The recovery rate stands at 97.15 per cent.
GMC has been in the midst of controversy last year where patients with comorbidities have succumbed to Covid under mysterious circumstances. While political parties demanded an impartial independent inquiry in deaths, they questioned the safety protocol followed for patients admitted at Goa premier hospital for other ailments, and also the systems followed for isolation of Covid suspects.
