In another development on the newborn child abandoned at Margao, the Margao police arrested a 25-year-old youth Yellappa Harijan in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, women and child rights activist, Auda Viegas has lodged a complaint with the Colva police seeking action against the 25-year-old youth under the provisions of the POCSO Act for allegedly impregnating the minor girl, who had delivered the infant at Sirvodem earlier this week.
Margao Police station in-charge, PI Tulsidas Naik informed that the accused has been remanded to five days of police custody by the court in connection with the case of abandonment of the newborn.
He said the accused youth, a native of Karnataka, was staying at Benaulim and is believed to be the cousin of the minor victim girl.
Since the incident of sexual abuse had taken place at Benaulim some months ago, the Colva police will investigate the case under the provisions of POCSO Act, he said.
“The minor victim girl, who had delivered the baby girl was staying at Benaulim before the family had shifted to Sirvodem-Margao two months ago. Hence, the Colva police will investigate the case under the provisions of POCSO Act,” he added.
To a question, PI Naik informed that the newborn baby girl, who was rushed to the South Goa district hospital after she was found abandoned at Sirvodem, has now been shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
He said the minor victim girl aged 17 years, who had delivered the baby girl, has been discharged from the hospital.
The police is conducting further investigations.
In the meantime, Auda informed that the youth had allegedly sexually assaulted her in the month of December. "Since the incident of sexual assault had taken place in December in Benaulim, I have lodged a complaint to the Colva police station," she added.
