CANACONA
While Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes and many other candidates are vying for the BJP ticket for the Canacona constituency election in 2022, the opposition is also preparing for the battle and is in the process of shortlisting candidates in their own parties.
CONGRESS
There are already three claimants to the Congress ticket, but if sources are to be believed there are at least two others from outside the cadre waiting for an opportunity to contest the Canacona seat on the Congress ticket.
One of the three early claimants is GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari.
“My party is aware of my claim to the party nomination to contest assembly election from Canacona. Fighting election is nothing new to me, as I had served as the youngest sarpanch of Poinguinim, before taking up several social, sports and co-curricular activities and mainstream politics.
GPCC Secretary and former Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Mahadev Dessai is another aspirant who says he has been engaged in various local activities.
“My support base is strongly demanding that I should contest on the Congress ticket, win the Canacona seat and be the voice of the Canacona Congress,” said Dessai.
Former ZP member Daya Pagui is a third candidate who is seeking the opportunity to contest on the Congress ticket.
While these three aspirants are party workers, the local cadre is apprehensive that Congress may field an imported candidate as there are strong rumours that an ex-MLA and a high profile businessman are both exploring the possibility of contesting from the Congress ticket.
AAP
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesman and candidate for the 2017 Canacona constituency elections, Sandesh Telekar, is expected to be in the fray for the 2022 election in Canacona.
Besides Telekar, the ZP (Khola) candidate Remy Borges, who surprised everyone by polling a substantial number of votes, is also expected to stake claim for the AAP ticket to contest Canacona assembly seat.
GOA FORWARD
The Goa Forward Party is all set to contest the Canacona assembly seat for the first time and the party is most likely to turn its party spokesman and former student leader Prashant Naik.
Naik may be new in the fray, but he is well-known in every nook and corner of the taluka.
REVOLUTIONARY GOANS
Revolutionary Goans (RG) has been active during the Covid pandemic and is also set to contest the assembly election in Canacona.
According to sources, the RG Canacona coordinator Sangam Naique or 'Let’s Help Goa' incharge for Canacona Prashant Pagui are most likely to contest from RG in Canacona.
