After the Chicalim Sub District Hospital (SDH) successfully handled and treated Covid patients in the hospital by converting one ward as a Covid ward, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Health Sub Committee has now requested authorities to reserve beds to treat dengue patients in its jurisdiction.
MMC Health, Sanitary and Medical Committee Chairman and Ward 6 Councillor Prajay Mayekar told reporters that suspected dengue cases had been on the rise in some wards of the MMC.
“The situation is cause for concern because there has been a previous outbreak of dengue in Mormugao taluka and dengue has claimed some lives as well in the past.”
“While the MMC has already decided to carry out an extensive fogging drive across all wards, MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar has also approved insecticide and required diesel for fumigation," said Mayekar.
"We have also noticed that the Chicalim SDH has successfully handled and treated many Covid patients and the hospital now has seen a lot of improvement with all facilities available.”
“We request authorities to reserve beds or even have a ward reserved for dengue patients from our taluka, as it would be convenient for patients and family members to have access to the closest government hospital," said Mayekar.
Another member of the MMC committee and Ward 23 Councillor Vinod Kinlekar appealed to people to take precautions against dengue.
"While the MMC will do its best and create awareness programmes with health officials and even carry out fumigation, it is finally in the hands of the people to take necessary precautions,” said Kinlekar.
He has appealed to people not to allow accumulation of water in pots, tyres or water storage barrels.
“People must also cover water storage tanks to avoid mosquito breeding and also keep changing any water that they may have seen saturating. While the MMC and government will do its best, people can support us by taking utmost precautions against dengue," said Kinlekar.
