Several areas across Bardez, including large parts of Mapusa, were left without pipeline water on Thursday following the bursting of a major water pipeline in Assonora.
The incident caused widespread inconvenience to residents, who woke up to dry taps with no prior warning from the Public Works Department (PWD).
According to officials, a 700 mm diameter main pipeline ruptured early Thursday morning at Ganeshnagar, Assonora, reportedly due to high pressure.
The damage was detected at around 5.30 am, prompting the PWD to deploy emergency teams to begin repair work immediately.
“Work is going on at a fast pace. We expect to complete the repair and restore water supply late in the evening,” a senior PWD engineer informed.
Mapusa was among the worst-hit areas, with several localities receiving little to no water during the morning supply window.
The lack of an official announcement regarding the disruption further added to residents' frustration.
“This is happening time and again. The PWD is the most irresponsible department,” said Ritesh Naik, a resident of Ansabhat, Mapusa.
Another resident called for urgent infrastructure upgrades: “It's high time the department overhauls its aged infrastructure so that such disruptions are not repeated in future.”
PWD officials assured that all efforts were being made to restore normalcy and minimize inconvenience to the public.
However, concerns continue to mount over the reliability of the existing water supply system and the department’s preparedness for such emergencies.
