Expressing concern over the spurt in deaths due to road accidents, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo urged the government to look into the likely causes over the sudden rise in road mishaps instead of focusing on issuing challans to offenders.
Lobo on Monday also said the government should stop the practice of giving targets to traffic police on issuing challans and concentrate on creating awareness among the riders and drivers on following traffic rules.
“There has been a perceptible rise in deaths due to road accidents in the last two weeks. It’s a matter of grave concern that young people are dying in road mishaps almost every day. The government should institute a probe/study on the rise of road accidents and find ways how to stop this massacre on our roads,” Lobo said.
The Calangute MLA was addressing the journalists at the sidelines of a promotion event in Parra.
On Sunday, three youth in the age group of 20 to 30 lost their lives in two separate accidents.
Besides, incidents of road accidents are reported from various parts of the State almost every day.
According to Lobo, many people who get seriously injured in accidents pass away in two or three days but such cases never get reported.
He said traffic police failed to arrest the trend of road mishaps as they were busy issuing challans to complete the targets set for them.
“This practice of giving targets to traffic police should be stopped immediately. I will talk to the CM to ensure that police are entrusted with the responsibility to bring about discipline on roads,” he said.
