In yet another political switch in Calangute constituency, former Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, who had recently shifted from Congress to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), on Tuesday joined the BJP and is likely to be given the party ticket to contest from Calangute constituency.
Sequeira joined the BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other party leaders.
Sequeira was one among a number of Congress leaders in Calangute who had joined the TMC on January 14.
Hinting that Sequeira may be given the party ticket, Sawant said his entry in the party would strengthen the BJP.
"We have the best contender for Calangute who will give BJP an additional winning seat in the upcoming assembly elections. We will win the polls by an absolute majority,” said Sawant.
While slamming former minister Michael Lobo for leaving party, Sawant said Sequeira has taken the right decision for the development of Calangute.
When asked if he would contest elections on the BJP ticket Sequeira said, "If the party gives me a ticket, I will put all my efforts towards it."
He said he had joined the BJP to contest against Michael Lobo.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said Lobo had ditched the party and supporters for his selfish gains.
BJP State President Sadanand Shet Tanawde said Sequeira had resigned from the TMC on Tuesday morning and officially joined the BJP in the evening.
