A decomposed body was found near the Mapusa Municipal Council’s garbage collection centre adjacent to the KTC bus stand on Thursday evening.
According to sources, the unidentified person may have died a few days earlier but this did not come to the attention of municipal employees.
On Thursday evening, some persons noticed some unusual stench near the garbage collection centre, only to notice a decomposed body.
The Mapusa police was then notified and after a panchanama, the body was sent for an autopsy at the GMC hospital at Bambolim to ascertain the cause of death.
MMC Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandesh Chodankar, Police Inspector Nikhil Palekar and some councillors also visited the site.
According to locals, some homeless people use the garbage collection centre as shelter for the night, while adding that some antisocial activities also take place at the site at night.
