Businessmen hope for investment boost after Tata meet with CM

PANAJI

Goa's business circles were agog following an interaction between N Chandrasekharan, the chairman of Tata Sons group and Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday, hoping it signals a boost to investment in the State.

Also at the meeting was Noel Tata, a member of the Tata family and a few members of the Goa State Industries Association.

Opportunities for investment in Goa in IT, aviation manufacturing, retail, besides tourism and hospitality were discussed, according to a source present during the discussions.

The Tata group has significant presence in Goa's tourism sector. It owns and operates multiple properties in Goa including the iconic Taj Hermitage, Taj hotel and Taj Holiday Village in Sinquerim, and is credited to have played a crucial role in building infrastructure to help Goa host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOG-M) back in the early 1980s.

However, in the decades of its presence in Goa through its hotels arm Indian Hotels Ltd, the Tata Group has made no major investment in other sectors.

Meanwhile, post the meeting, Sawant tweeted: "Goa possesses immense potential in industry development and employment generation. Investment by industry conglomerates like Tata Sons shall offer great opportunities for Goa."
