Calangute police apprehended a suspect linked to a recent chain-snatching incident, recovering a stolen gold chain valued at Rs 1.5 lakh.
The crime occurred on October 23 at around 3.45 am near the Calangute parking area at the Bandodkar statue. The victim, Santosh Akki, reported that an unknown individual snatched his gold chain and fled on a scooter.
Acting on this report, a dedicated team from Calangute Police Station, including PSI Vighnesh Naik, HC Vidhyanand Amonkar and constables Vijay Naik, Ganpat Tiloji and Raj Parab, quickly launched an investigation.
Their efforts led to the arrest of Rasib Mulla (22), a resident of Canca and native of West Bengal, who was spotted acting suspiciously in the Calangute area.
During questioning, Mulla confessed to the crime and directed the officers to the stolen gold chain, which was subsequently recovered. The investigation, led by Calangute PI Paresh G Naik and SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe.
Meanwhile, Calangute police also apprehended a suspected mobile phone thief, Dinesh (31), a resident of Anjuna, originally from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The police noticed Dinesh’s suspicious behaviour while on patrol near Bodke wado in Calangute. When questioned, Dinesh attempted to flee but was swiftly pursued and detained. Upon questioning, Dinesh confessed to stealing multiple mobile phones from locations across Calangute.
Police recovered four stolen phones from him, two of which were tied to a theft case filed at the Calangute Police Station.
The complaint, lodged by Afsar Khan (37), a private-sector employee from Bengaluru, Karnataka, reported stolen phones from Calangute.
The accused is now in custody and will face charges under Section 303(2) of the BNS 2023.
