With the festive and party season approaching, concerns about noise pollution are mounting.
Emphasising its role in addressing noise violations, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) said that its primary responsibilities are consent management and technical support, leaving immediate ground action to the police and the deputy collector.
GSPCB Chairman Mahesh Patil explained that the Board provides technical assistance, including noise monitoring equipment and training to the police.
“We give technical support and consent management to various restaurants and clubs. We provide noise monitoring equipment to police stations and train the officers to interpret the data. They don’t need to consult us; they can monitor violations directly on the digital boards and take immediate action,” Patil said.
Real-time monitoring systems installed in several restaurants and clubs are connected to the GSPCB’s central system. These systems allow the Board to identify violations, such as playing loud music beyond 10 pm, and notify the police for action.
“The police and the deputy collector are the first authorities to act against noise violations. Our staff are not available during weekends or late at night, but the police are on duty 24x7, making them more suited to respond swiftly," Patil stated.
"People can call us, but the police are the immediate contact point," he added.
A senior police officer echoed this, saying, "Typically, the local police are the first to respond to noise complaints. The public can call the emergency helpline 112, which is monitored by a police control room. The control room staff then alert the concerned Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), police inspector, and relevant departments."
With the GSPCB actively monitoring noise levels and the police on standby, authorities aim to ensure stricter enforcement of noise regulations during the festive season.
Citizens are encouraged to report violations promptly for swift action.
