PERNEM
Pernem police foiled as many as four bullfights (dhirio) which were planned at Mandrem on Saturday.According to sources, four bullfights had been planned at different venues in Mandrem, but Pernem police were tipped on Friday night and posted police teams at all four venues.
With police teams stationed at the four sites, the organisers quickly abandoned plans to stage the dhirios.
When contacted, Pernem Police Inspector Vikram Naik said he had received reliable information regarding the bullfights and he had posted police teams to stop any such events.
“I had also directed the police to take strict action if anyone was found involved in the bullfights."
Meanwhile, rumours are rife that PI Naik may be transferred out of the Pernem police after he took action against illegal sand excavation activities and had closed down illegal gambling dens.
And with his latest action against dhirios, locals suspected that forces may be at play to have PI Naik shunted out of the Pernem police station.
When asked to comment on these rumours, PI Naik replied: “I do not support illegal activities and if there are people who want me transferred, let them do so. I am ready to work from any place," PI Naik said.
