Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Friday pledged his full support to the Global Konkani Forum in their efforts to secure official recognition for the Romi Lipi script of Konkani language.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with members of the forum on Friday, Vas expressed gratitude to the group for raising the issue and assured them of his commitment to advocating for their cause.
“I thanked the forum for meeting with me and discussing the importance of giving recognition to the Romi Lipi script for Konkani. It has been 37 years since Konkani gained official language status, but Romi Lipi has not yet been recognised. This is a crucial issue, and I will do everything I can to support their demand,” said Vas.
The MLA further stated that he plans to seek legal advice and will take the issue up with Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant.
“I have assured the forum that I will discuss this with a lawyer for a formal opinion and bring this matter to the CM's attention. The village panchayats in my Cortalim constituency have also passed resolutions in support of Romi Lipi, and I will ensure these resolutions are placed before the government,” Vas added.
Vas emphasised that a united effort is needed to achieve recognition for Romi Lipi and indicated that he would even support a private member's bill in the Assembly to push the demand forward.
The Global Konkani Forum has long been advocating for the inclusion of Romi Lipi alongside Devanagari, which currently holds official status for Konkani.
With support from leaders like Vas, the forum hopes that their cause will gain momentum and lead to the formal recognition they seek.
