Health and local administration officials inspected the Cutbona fishing jetty today against the backdrop of five deaths of migrant workers due to Cholera.
The jetty has already seen a rise in Dengue and Cholera cases. During the inspection, the team found major lapses in cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene.
"The jetty lacks basic infrastructure such as toilets. The bio-toilets are also non-functional. The new jetty is not integrated or fully utilized. We have requested an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the fisheries department," Deputy Collector Ganesh Barve addressed the media after the inspection.
The team, he added, also identified issues with waste discharge, which has directly impacted the spread of these diseases.
"The surrounding atmosphere is unregulated, and the jetty lacks proper validation. This has contributed to the increase in cases of dengue, malaria, and other diseases. Cholera, in particular, has spread due to contact with contaminated water and unhygienic conditions," he said.
Barve urged the people working at the jetty to follow basic hygiene such as handwashing, drinking boiled water and proper sanitation to curb the outbreak of these illnesses. While a close vigil will be maintained to ensure compliance, the authorities are scheduled to hold inspections in the coming days.
