When Margao MLA Digambar Kamat descended in the Margao Municipal-owned New Market when the firemen were battling the fire at the mega market, he announced that officials of the various departments will meet on Wednesday to take stock of the situation and find remedial measures.
Strange it may seem but true that no meeting of the officials of the deputy Collector, Margao, Fire Services, Margao Municipality or the Power Department took place on Wednesday. In fact, when The Goan called up an official to find out the outcome of the joint meeting convened by the Margao MLA, the official said no such meeting took place on Wednesday.
In fact, if sources are to be believed, questions are raised whether any purpose would be served by the proposed meeting when the MMC has been sitting on the recommendations of the fire department to implement fire safety measures. That’s not all. Sources further pointed out that the fire incident falls within the domain of the district Disaster Management Authority, with an official saying the Authority headed by the district Collector should step in to crack a whip and get the authorities to perform their duties.
