MARGAO
There’s good news in store for the persons with disabilities and senior citizens in the commercial capital.
Thanks to an initiative by Margao Municipal Chief Officer, Agnelo Fernandes, a number of toilets spread across the city will soon become senior citizens, disabled friendly.
The Margao Municipal Council has embarked on an ambitious plan to renovate around eight existing toilet blocks in the city. As and when these toilet blocks are renovated, the civic body has drawn up plans to make provision for one toilet each in these blocks for the persons with disability.
Chief Officer Agnelo said he has discussed the proposal with the Sulabh International, who are presently carrying out the maintenance of the 15 toilets. “As per the Persons with Disability Act, we have to cater to the needs of persons with disabilities. Hence, the civic body has initiated the exercise in the city,” he added.
To a question, the Chief Officer said these toilets once renovated can be used by the persons with disabilities as well as the senior citizens. “We have already identified the places where the disabled-friendly toilets will come up. Four such toilets will come up at Moti Dongor, two at Chinchal and one each at Peda and Calconda,” he said.
