Pointing out that hundreds of houses have been given permission on the banks of the River Sal, Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro on Wednesday said the Town and Country Planning Department should not give permission to such constructions so that such structures do not get flooded when river levels rise in future.
Speaking on demands related to TCP and other departments in the assembly on Wednesday, Faleiro brought to the notice of the House that there are hundreds of houses along the River Sal without any setback.
“The TCP department has given permission to these houses and many of these houses release their sewage in the river. If floods take place, these houses will be washed away and it will be a man-made disaster,” said Faleiro.
“If we do unplanned development, nature has its own plan to take revenge,” he warned.
Highlighting the problem of sewage due to unplanned development, Faleiro said many fields had become uncultivable after sewage had entered into paddy fields due to incessant rains.
"Please don't approve such projects along the riverbanks. We need to protect, preserve and hand over our distinct environment to future generations,” said Faleiro.
