Konkan Railway Corporation senior officer Public relations Baban Ghatge has said that the e-tender floated by the Corporation has invited bids to run only bike rentals, beside pod hotels at Margao.
Taxi operators, however, fear that the Konkan Railway’s plan is to make a beginning in the bike rentals and will gradually venture into the taxi business at a later stage.
Ghatge told The Goan that the KRC want to tap the bike rental business in view of the heavy tourist footfalls at the Margao railway station. “The e-tender floated by the Corporation is to invite bids to run the bike rentals”, he said.
Besides, he said that the KRC have drawn up plans to set up pod hotels at the Margao railway station for the benefit of the passengers. “With the pod hotel facility in place, passengers can alight at the railway station, book a pod hotel room, go out for their work and return home to take the train journey back home”, he said.
He, however, declined to comment on fears and apprehensions raised amongst the existing stakeholders that the KRC’s plans will spell doom for their traditional business.
